since 1st April 2010, I would like to draw your attention to the new law on child car seat. In general, the major change will be the use of booster seat for the bigger children.
children up to the age of 12 or the height of 150cm (whichever comes first) will have to use booster seat in order to allow the seat belt to rest in a proper position and offer maximal protection.
If your child is younger and doesn’t fall into this age range, please make sure your car seat has the European Safety Standard Code. It’s a yellow/orange label (see picture below) that should have ECE R44.03 or ECE R44.04 written on it. The ones with 01 or 02 will not be allowed anymore from 1st April! And for parents who brought their car seats from countries outside the EU or CH, pay attention here: By law, your car seat is NOT allowed to be used in EU and CH.

I also recommend you to take a look at the list of crash tests that they did with many different types and brands of car seats. You may be surprised that some car seats, including branded ones, were found to offer no protection at all!
There are some exceptions to this law. For example, if your car doesn’t have the space for 3 car seats, than the oldest child can go without one and use the normal adult seat belt. It seems that it’s also allowed to go without car seat in taxis (I found these info in European regulation here but still have to confirm with the TCS or Police. I’ll keep you posted when I find out). However, I still recommend you to have an age/weight-appropriate car seat and use it when you take the taxi. We took taxis several time to go to the Hôpital des Enfants and the taxi drivers were always happy that we brought a car seat with us.
Finally, you can have a free check of your car seat at Baby Rose or Autour de Bébé, to see if it fits the TCS standard.
And please remember, even when these regulations seem to annoy many parents, they’re made for a good reason, to protect the life of our precious little ones!
